On the Ballot: State Property Tax Ban

As Tennesseans prepare to head to the polls in just under two months, we face a variety of choices, from who we will elect as our next governor to what changes we may make to our Constitution. On the Ballot seeks to highlight some of these choices, with this edition’s focus being Constitutional Amendment #2.  

Constitutional Amendment #2 seeks to ban Tennessee’s state government from imposing a property tax.

A wide coalition of organizations has rallied around the proposed amendment, including the Tennessee Farm Bureau, Tennessee Realtors, Tennessee Chamber of Commerce, Americans for Prosperity, the Beacon Center of Tennessee, and the National Federation of Independent Business’ Tennessee chapter. These organizations noted various reasons for their support of the ban on a state property tax, from supporting the state’s agricultural economy to lowering barriers for home ownership, to maintaining a strong business environment.

Gov. Bill Lee is serving as the statewide chairman for the effort, and Speaker Cameron Sexton (R-Crossville), Representative Tandy Darby (R-Greenfield), and Senator Ferrell Haile (R-Gallatin) are serving as chairs for their respective regions.

Other notable Tennessee leaders have also thrown their support behind Amendment 2. 

Tennessee Senator and Republican Nominee for Governor Marsha Blackburn took to X earlier this year to say, “Tennessee ought not to have a statewide property tax, and we ought to be the freest state in the nation. This November, we’ll move one step closer to that goal. Vote Yes on 2 TN.”
